Even a minor car accident can leave you sore, stiff and worried about what comes next. Many injuries don't fully show up for a day or two, and the pain can make driving to a clinic the last thing you want to do. Auto injury rehab at home lets you start recovering right away, without getting back in the car.
What is auto injury rehab?
Auto injury rehab is physical therapy that treats the pain, stiffness and weakness caused by a motor vehicle accident, so you can move normally and get back to work and daily life. It usually combines hands-on treatment, gentle movement, strengthening and a home exercise program, guided by a licensed physical therapist.
Common injuries after a car accident
- Whiplash and neck strain: neck pain, stiffness and trouble turning your head
- Back pain: muscle strain in the upper or lower back from the impact or seat belt
- Shoulder injuries: often on the side of the seat belt or from bracing on the wheel
- Knee and hip injuries: from hitting the dashboard or bracing your legs
- Headaches that start at the base of the skull
- Dizziness and balance problems after a jolt to the head and neck
Symptoms that can show up later
Adrenaline can hide pain at first. Watch for these in the days after an accident:
- Neck or back stiffness that gets worse the next morning
- Headaches, especially at the back of the head
- Numbness or tingling in the arms or hands
- Dizziness, trouble sleeping or trouble concentrating
See a doctor first after any accident to rule out fractures, concussion or other serious injuries. Go to the emergency room for severe headache, confusion, weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain that keeps getting worse.
What recovery usually looks like
Every injury is different, and your doctor's guidance comes first. In general:
- First 1β2 weeks: calming pain and muscle spasm, gentle range of motion, and learning safe ways to sleep, sit and move.
- Weeks 2β6: restoring full motion, strengthening the neck, back and core, and improving posture.
- Weeks 6 and beyond: getting back to work, driving comfortably, lifting and your normal activities.
Why rehab at home after an accident
- No driving while you're hurt. Many people are nervous about getting back in a car, and sitting in traffic can make neck and back pain worse.
- One-on-one care. Every visit is with a Doctor of Physical Therapy, not a rotating staff.
- Practice where you live. We work on the movements you actually need at home, such as getting out of bed, reaching into cabinets and lifting laundry.
- Clear records. We document your evaluation and progress at every visit.
How soon should I start?
Usually as soon as your doctor has ruled out serious injury. Starting early with the right movement can help prevent stiffness from setting in and lower the chance of pain becoming long-term. Waiting weeks "to see if it gets better" often makes recovery slower.
Who pays for therapy after a car accident?

UPT Services works with auto insurance medical benefits for car accident patients. Coverage limits vary by policy, so call us before your first visit and we'll check what's covered. UPT Services also accepts Medicare Part B, Aetna Medicare plans and Independence Blue Cross plans, including Keystone 65.
