Falls are one of the most common reasons older adults lose their independence, but many are preventable. Here are seven changes we recommend most often during in-home visits.
1. Light the way
Add night lights between the bedroom and bathroom, and make sure every staircase has a switch at the top and bottom.
2. Remove or secure throw rugs
Loose rugs are a top trip hazard. Remove them, or use non-slip backing and double-sided tape.
3. Clear walkways
Keep cords, shoes, pet bowls and clutter out of the paths you use every day.
4. Make the bathroom safer
Grab bars by the toilet and in the shower, a non-slip mat, and a shower chair can make a big difference.
5. Wear supportive shoes
Slippers and socks slide easily. Choose closed-back shoes with non-slip soles, even indoors.
6. Keep moving
Leg strength and balance fade quickly without use. Simple daily exercises, like sit-to-stands from a sturdy chair, help keep you steady.
7. Get a balance check
If you've fallen, feel unsteady, or have started holding onto furniture to walk, a physical therapist can test your balance and build a plan for you.
